Maria Altman was born in Stockholm 1974 and started painting and sketching at an early age. Over the years she has developed and honed her technique through art courses including aquarelles, figurative drawing, portraits, landscapes, nudes and color theory. She has a keen interest in shapes and colors, drawing inspiration from both nature and the shape of the human body.
In 2025, Maria changed her artistic style from mainly figurative painting and sketching to abstract art with a particular focus on the concrete. Her abstract paintings are typically acrylics on large canvases, using well defined color schemes where patterns are traceable in the haze of paint. The abstract paintings are usually full of color with remnants of recognizable figures which leave plenty of room for the imagination of the viewer.
The concrete motives can be perceived as a deliberate disruption of the ordinary, of what is expected, and challenge the viewers’ perception of order. Exact geometric shapes highlight the illusion of perfectionism, before adding contrasting and seemingly unpredictable cascades of paint. The effect is a layered perception of what could be interpreted as organized chaos, or the disruption of what could have been an idealistic and well-functioning pattern.
